What is a NatHERS Assessment (Energy Rating Report), and why do I need one?
A NatHERS Assessment (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) is an official report that rates the energy efficiency of your home’s design on a scale of 0 to 10 stars. It is mandatory for all new homes and most major renovations/extensions in Australia to ensure compliance with the energy efficiency requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC).
What documents do you need from me to start the assessment?
To provide an accurate and prompt assessment, we require the following documents from your architect or designer:
Construction/Material Specifications (e.g., wall types, roof materials, insulation levels)
Architectural Plans (Floor Plans, Elevations, Sections)
Site Plan (showing boundaries and orientation)
Window and Glazing Schedule
How long does the NatHERS Assessment process take?
The turnaround time depends on the complexity of your project and the quality of the plans provided. Once we receive all the necessary documentation, a standard assessment can typically be completed within 1 to 3 business days. We recommend engaging us early in the design process to allow time for any necessary compliance adjustments.
What happens if my design doesn’t meet the minimum star rating?
If the initial assessment does not meet the minimum required star rating, our experts will provide you with specific, cost-effective recommendations to achieve compliance. This might include adjusting insulation R-values, optimising window and glazing specifications, or minor design changes. We work with you until compliance is achieved.
Do you only assess the thermal shell, or do you include other energy features?
Our reports cover both:
Whole-of-Home Assessment: Under the NCC 2022, we also assess the energy usage of your fixed appliances (hot water, lighting, heating/cooling) and account for any onsite solar generation, giving you a complete picture of your home’s total energy performance.
Thermal Performance (The Star Rating): The efficiency of the building’s fabric (walls, windows, roof, floor).
